AUTMHQ UPDATES

Hola and Hello!

Because this is the final edition for 2021, I'd like to use it to recap our 5 Most Viewed Events for the year. But, before we get there, I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you, AUTMers, who have supported, followed, promoted, and donated to our mission.

AUTMHQ began as a goal and has grown into a powerful movement that is raising awareness about digital inequity and helping in the elimination of the problem of a lack of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. We've come a long way since the beginning. We have been able to award 1.2 million dollars in scholarships as a result of our efforts. We've put over 120 families on the path to earning $60,000 or more per year. We were able to provide computers and internet access to 16,000 families, allowing them to continue their education.

We couldn't have done it without your help, but as a non-profit, we need your support to continue. AUTMHQ provides numerous ways for our community to get involved in our movement. You can volunteer and make your days extraordinary; you can mentor our program participants and help them achieve their goals, and you can go right now to change.org and sign our Texas Technology For All Petition and help us provide Internet access to communities that do not have it. We are only 17 percent away from hitting our goal! You can also make a donation to help us cover the costs of AUTMites completing their certifications.

So, for 2022, please take the action and join AUTMHQ. Become the movement and do your part to reshape the tech industry and open the doors to anyone who wants to enter, thrive, and excel in it. In the meantime, we wish you a prosperous new year and hope that it brings you good health, joy, and happiness in your family and community.

Dec 22nd, 2021 | 🌖 What an AUTM Talk we had with Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz!

Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz, the first Costa Rican and Hispanic astronaut, took us back to the day he received the call to be confirmed as a NASA astronaut in a memorable live chat with AUTMHQ. This conversation was not only fascinating and educational but also inspiring and motivating. And if you've been thinking about taking the first step toward realizing a dream, you should watch this talk because you'll be propelled to just do it. Paty Sesma interviewed Dr. Chang-Diaz, and she was able to ask many questions that members of the Hispanic community could use to gain inspiration and motivation to pursue their professional goals.

Nov 30th, 2021 | 💬 AUTM Talks by AUTMHQ: The Space Race Runs Through Texas

We were honored to host an AUTM Talk with Brent Wistrom of Austin Inno, Kevin Cummings of Dallas Biz Journal, and Chris Matthews of Houston Inno, authors of "The Space Race Runs Through Texas." This discussion was based on an article of the same name, which discussed interviews and research on space rockets and objects built in Texas, as well as lunar landers, satellites, and Mars housing. We learned about the start-up companies that have chosen the Lone Star state to establish their headquarters and begin working on space exploration. Paty Sesma, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, led this discussion and was able to ask basic questions about Texas's role in this space race, as well as some questions from the audience.

July 14th, 2021 | 👤👤 Day in the Life of Kevin Alvarado from Storable

We were given the opportunity to spend a "Day in the Life" with one of Storable's more remarkable employees during this event. We shadowed Kevin Alvarado, CSPO, CSM, a Senior Product Manager, IoT at Storable, and learned about his responsibilities as well as the passion that drives him to do his work every day. AUTMHQ's Day in the Life explores the responsibilities and activities associated with a specific occupation in the technology industry, allowing us to learn about their impact on the company and the tech industry as a whole. Isa White, AUTMHQ's Programming Director, moderated the discussion and guided us through the responsibilities of a project manager and the value that this position brings to a company.

June 30th, 2021 | 💬 AUTM Talks: Building the Workforce Development Ecosystem

Over the last five years, we have seen an increase in the population of Central Texas, as well as an increase in the number of tech businesses and the demand for technical and nontechnical skills to fill positions in the tech industry. Despite the need for new initiatives and policies to capitalize on these opportunities, we have seen a widening racial wealth gap, an increase in the homeless population, and little to no change in diversity numbers across the tech industry. To implement generational solutions and break down silos, AUTMHQ is constructing the tech workforce development ecosystem by collaborating with the community's five stakeholders: employers, institutions, organizations, governmental departments, and individual contributors. Our President and CEO, Michael Ward Jr., shared how AUTMHQ is increasing diversity in technology and ways in which everyone can get involved in the AUTMHQ movement.
