Maria Campos
Board Member
María I. Campos currently serves as Regional Technician for the U.S. Census Bureau Field Division. María is responsible for developing partnerships with community-based and faith-based organizations, schools, media outlets, and grassroots entities and assisting with recruitment and service based enumeration for the Austin/San Antonio region and surrounding rural counties, focusing on the historically undercounted Latino communities.
Prior to her current role, María served as the Program Director for several community based youth programs encompassing youth mentoring and truancy prevention. María also led the development of the young Latina toolkit, Mi Hermana’s Keeper, the first of its kind, which will develop and implement evidence-based curriculum for system involved Latina youth utilizing participatory action research methods, capturing the voices of Latina youth and their families. María has spent her entire career in public service, and has worked for members of the Texas House, Texas Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, in Texas and Washington, D.C. María’s focus has been on building community partnerships, program evaluation, data management, legislative policy and social services. She holds a Master in Public Administration in Non-Profit Management and Public Policy from the City University of New York-Baruch School of Public Affairs, where she was selected as a National Urban Fellow.
She received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from St. Edwards University. Her experiences as a Latina growing up in East Austin, along with over twenty years in child advocacy and youth justice, María is impassioned about addressing the social and educational disparities of underserved populations, as well as changing the trajectory in the lives of youth and families, in the very same community in which she was born and raised. She is an alumni of the New Leaders Council 2020, Austin cohort. She has also had the pleasure of serving as a CASA Advocate and has served as a youth mentor for over twenty years and on the Texas Mentor Partnership Founding Advisory Council.
